How to Obtain Civil Documents in Lithuania

Marriage License
Individuals wishing to marry in Lithuania must complete all required forms and submit them along with their passport, birth certificate, and required documents (with certifications) to the Civil Registrar's Office (Marriage Palace).  The Registry is located at K. Kalinausko gatve 21/1, LT-03107 Vilnius.  The Registry can be contacted by phone at 233-53-54.  Applicants complete local forms and pay the service fee to the Registry.  A 30-day waiting period is required, after which the couple returns to the Registry to sign and receive the marriage license.  Additional information may be found on the U.S. Embassy's website at http://vilnius.usembassy.gov/marriage.html and the Registry's website at http://www.vilnius.lt/newvilniusweb/index.php/133/?mid={en;3;333}.

Birth Certificate
Parents wishing to obtain an original Lithuanian birth certificate for their child must complete all required forms and submit them along with the hospital record of birth, parents' passports or other forms of identification, and the parents' marriage certificate (if applicable) to the Civil Registrar's Office (Marriage Palace).  The Registry is located at K. Death Certificate
A next-of-kin wishing to obtain an original Lithuanian death certificate for their relative must complete all required forms and submit them along with the hospital record of death, or proof of death from a doctor if the relative died outside a hospital, and the relative's passport to the Civil Registrar's Office (Marriage Palace).  The Registry is located at K. Copies of Civil Documents
The U.S. Embassy is precluded by Lithuanian law from assisting American citizens to obtain copies of Lithuanian certificates of birth or other civil documents.  In accordance with the Lithuanian Law on the Legal Protection of Personal Data, the Lithuanian State Historical Archives is no longer permitted to release any information to the Embassy regarding private individuals. It is recommended that you contact the Lithuanian authorities listed below for more information regarding copies of birth certificates or other civil documents.
