Congratulations on Lithuanian Independence Day
March 10, 2011
On behalf of the United States government and the American people, the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius offers congratulations to the people of Lithuania as they celebrate the 21st anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania's independence. On March 11, 1990, brave Lithuanian patriots voted for independence while the Soviet Army still occupied your country. Although times were trying and full of uncertainty in the year leading up to independence, the people of Lithuania never lost their resolve to uphold their independence and regain their freedom. As Secretary Clinton noted in her statement on the occasion of the 20th anniversary last year, Lithuania has "become a beacon of hope to those seeking freedom all over the world".
This year is also special for the United States as we recognize the 20th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations with Lithuania and the re-establishment of the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius. The United States is proud to have independent, democratic Lithuania as a strong partner, friend and ally.
Congratulations on the occasion of this anniversary. Peace and prosperity to our two nations.
