Visit of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy Bay Fang
August 16, 2012
On August 16th, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy Bay Fang visited Druskininkai as part of her Nordic-Baltic working tour. DAS Fang made a presentation for the participants at the Lithuanian International Model UN Camp on the topic of “New Diplomacy and Smart Power.” Two US Army cadres—LTC Ken Smedley and LTC Patrick Calahan-- from the second Cultural Understanding and Language Proficiency Program (CULP) group also shared their thoughts and professional experiences with the LIMUN participants.
After both presentations, LIMUN participants were invited to share comments and ask questions of the visitors. The participants expressed an interest in American foreign policy and international relations that, interestingly enough, stemmed from one student’s experiences in the United States. University student Dominykas Milašius founded the LIMUN after taking part in Model UN activities during an exchange program in the US. After his return to Lithuania, Dominykas organized LIMUN conferences in Vilnius and Kaunas then turned to US Embassy Vilnius for help in finding American speakers for the Druskininkai camp. Embassy representatives were welcomed warmly at the LIMUN camp, and learned a lot from their experience there as well!
