January 18, 2012
From January 16th-18th, Eli Rosenbaum, the Director for Human Rights Enforcement Strategy and Policy, in the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section of the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice, visited Lithuania to meet with counterparts, government officials and to engage with law students. Mr. Rosenbaum, along with Ambassador Stephen Rapp, the State Department’s Special Envoy for Global Criminal Justice, spoke with about 50 students at Vytautas Magnus University Faculty of Law in Kaunas. They discussed the work their offices do on a daily basis to root out war criminals and fight human rights abuses around the world.
In addition, Mr. Rosenbaum spoke with about 35 students at Mykolas Romeris University Faculty of Law in Vilnius, and also met with a group of prosecutors, judges and law clerks from Kaunas to share experiences and practices. This was the first visit to Lithuania for both officials, although Mr. Rosenbaum has been working on cases dealing with Lithuania for almost 30 years.
