On 11 June, U.S. Ambassador John Cloud will present Marius Jasmontas and Martynas Smitas certificates of appointment to the United States Naval and Air Force Academies for the graduating Class of 2011. Mr. Jasmontas and Mr. Smitas have received full scholarships from the United States Government. Mr. Jasmontas, originally from the town of Skuodas, studied most recently at Vilniaus Licejus. Mr. Smitas is a cadet in the Lithuanian Military Academy
Prior to their selection, the two new appointees competed along with other talented and highly qualified Lithuanian young men and women for selection to one of three U.S. Service Academies. Their appointments will allow them to return for service in Lithuania upon completing a funded four-year Bachelor's program, four years of military training, and a military education together with U.S. and allied international students in 2011.
There are currently eight Lithuanians studying at three U.S. Service Academies. There are three Lithuanians at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Land Forces), two at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and three at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. In May, four Lithuanians graduated and have returned to Lithuania.
