U.S. Embassy Honors Three Lithuanians at Independence Day Ceremony

On July 4, the United States Embassy celebrated the 231st anniversary of American Independence in a ceremony that honored the outstanding achievements of three individual Lithuanians.

Signed on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence established an inseparable connection between independence and individual freedom, proclaiming that individuals should be free to pursue their hopes and dreams and to choose their own government.

Following a flag presentation summary by the U.S. Embassy‘s Marine Security Guard Detachment, the Lithuanian Armed Forces Honor Band Company Orchestra played the American and Lithuanian national anthems.

As United States Ambassador John Cloud declared in his Independence Day speech, this year marks the 85th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States of America and the Republic of Lithuania. In his speech, Ambassador Cloud recognized the “close and longstanding ties” that the United States and Lithuania enjoy.

Ambassador Cloud also honored three Lithuanians for their outstanding efforts to advance freedom and prosperity in Lithuania and beyond:

• Ambassador Ginte Damušis, for her leadership as Lithuania’s Ambassador to NATO and her efforts to launch Lithuania’s Provincial Recontruction Team in Afghanistan.

• Microsoft Lithuania, represented by Mr. Mindaugas Glodas, for demonstrating the importance of good corporate citizenship and promoting the protection of Intellectual Property Rights.

• Colonel Almantas Leika, for his role in providing security to Afghanistan‘s Ghor Province by training police officers, destroying ordnance, and conducting rescue operations.
