Today President G.W. Bush spoke to Lithuanian President Adamkus and Polish President Kwasniewski

December 9, 2004

The U.S. President called Presidents Adamkus and Kwasniewski to congratulate them on their leadership in European mediation efforts in Ukraine and to offer continued U.S. support for their efforts, together with the European Union.

President Bush noted how their own individual and national experiences offered valuable lessons for the Ukraine.

The three Presidents agreed that all parties now needed to implement reforms in good faith to ensure a free, fair repeat vote on December 26th.

They welcomed the strong NATO-Russia statement on Ukraine agreed by Foreign Ministers today in Brussels.

The Presidents underscored the importance of international observation of the December 26 vote, and agreed that the international community needed to remain focused on supporting a democratic process.
