U.S. Praises President Adamkus's Efforts to Mediate Situation in Ukraine

The U.S. Government praises the great efforts made by President Adamkus and the Lithuanian Government to mediate the crisis in the Ukraine. Fundamentally, the U.S. supports the desire of Ukraine's people to make their voices heard through leaders chosen in free and fair elections. It is therefore important to move towards quick resolution of the crisis.
In a recent phone call with President Kwasniewski, President Bush endorsed the efforts of the Lithuanian and Polish Presidents in finding a solution. President Bush has conveyed strong support for the European mediation effort, which produced the framework for an agreement between the two sides.
Secretary of State Powell noted, in a December 3rd Reuters interview, that he is very pleased by the positive role of President Adamkus, President Kwasniewski, and Javier Solana in helping resolve the crisis and the prospects for their continued involvement.
U.S. Ambassador Mull has expressed great respect for President Adamkus’s ongoing efforts to bring mediate the situation in the Ukraine. The Ambassador has stated: “It is a credit to Lithuania that President Adamkus was asked to help in this instance. One of the great things about Lithuania is that it is willing to help out others, and this mission reflects the respect others have for Lithuania.”
