November 12, 2002
12 Nov 2002 --Vilnius, Lithuania.
In regard to recent press reports about a possible threat to the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania, the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius wishes to clarify several points.
First, the U.S. Embassy is in constant contact with security officials in Lithuania and relies on their professionalism and expertise to protect U.S. interests in this country.
Second, as everyone is aware, the United States and Lithuania are among the many nations of the world joined together in a global war against terrorism. In this context, many terrorist threats are investigated daily. Some of these threats are specific and some are not, but they are all treated seriously.
As has subsequently been reported in Lithuania, in this instance the threat was not specific, even in regard to the country that was threatened. Finally, we are not aware of any specific threat to Lithuania or to U.S. interests in Lithuania, at this time.
