Vilnius, November 9, 2000-- The U.S Embassy in Vilnius is pleased to announce that it will be celebrating the 225th Birthday of the Marine Corps. The United States Marine Corps came into existence by an act of the Continental Congress on 10 November 1775. Each year the Marine Corps around the world recognizes this birthday through various types of celebrations. Regardless of the number of marines present in a country, Marines pause to honor the history, traditions, and legacy of their Corps. The highlight of every Marine Corps anniversary celebration is the Birthday Ball. This is normally a formal event where the Marines dress in their blue uniforms and guests are attired in their nicest outfits to look their best for the evening.
In Vilnius, a ceremony will take place following the cocktail hour, during which the U.S. Ambassador John F. Tefft will welcome guests and the guest of honor, acting Minister of Defense Česlovas Stankevičius, will deliver a speech. Once remarks are concluded, the traditional cutting of the birthday cake will take place.
Lieutenant Colonel John Terrell is the only active duty Marine in Lithuania. He is a member of the U.S. Embassy’s Military Liaison Team and has formed a committee to help him plan and prepare for the second Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Lithuania. As some of you know, in the summer of 2001 the embassy is scheduled to receive a Marine Corps Security Guard Detachment. For the past 51 years, United States Marines have been providing internal security for U.S. Missions around the world. Today there are 124 active Marine Detachments worldwide providing service to the Department of State's Embassies and Consulates. Since the breakup of the former Soviet Union, the United States has opened embassies in many of the new republics located in the Baltic States, Caucasus and Central Asian regions.
