U.S. and Lithuania Sign Extradition Treaty and Agreement on Promotion and Protection of Investments

October 23, 2001, Vilnius-- U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania John F. Tefft and Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis today signed an Agreement on Extradition and exchanged Ratification Letters of the Agreement on Stimulation and Bilateral Protection of Investments. The Extradition Treaty commits the law enforcement officials from both countries to cooperating in the search for and prosecution of suspected criminals on Lithuanian and U.S. territories. Before going into effect, the Treaty must be ratified by the U.S. Congress and Lithuanian Seimas. The U.S.-Lithuanian Agreement on the Stimulation and Bilateral Protection of Investments is intended to attract and safeguard investments as well as provide favorable investment climates in each country. Once enforced, it will be valid for ten years.
