National Minorities and the Media Seminar to Be Held at the American Center

Media event: media representatives are invited to participate. On Thursday, October 20 the seminar take place at the American Center 10.00 – 14.30.  Please call 2660 330 or e-mail litevkaitea@state.gov to register.

On October 20 the American Center is hosting the seminar “Mainstreaming equality and diversity: opening the debate with media” which aims at promoting better understanding between the media and national minorities in Lithuania.

The event starts at 10 a.m. on October 20 with the opening remarks by the Ambassador of the United States Stephen D. Mull, the Director General of the Department of National Minorities and Lithuanians Living Abroad to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania Mr. Antanas Petrauskas and the Deputy Chairman of Seimas Gintaras Steponavičius. Inspector of Journalist Ethics Romas Gudaitis will make a short speech on the responsibility of journalists in covering national minority issues.

Prof. Dr. Leonidas Donskis will present a lecture on rethinking minorities, prejudice and civil society in the context of globalization. Afterwards, the president of European Network Against Racism (ENAR) Mr. Bashy Quraishy will talk on the issue of Islam phobia and the relation between minorities and media.

On Friday, October 21, practical workshops on maintaining dialogue between media and national minorities will be held at the Department of Journalism of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas and the Department of National Minorities and Lithuanians Living Abroad to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.
