Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs of the United States Charles P. Ries to Visit Vilnius on 3 October 2003

The Embassy of the United States of America in Vilnius is pleased to announce that Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs of the United States Department of State Charles P. Ries will visit Vilnius on 3 October 2003.

As EU accession approaches next year, the U.S. would like to establish a basis for a relationship with Lithuania on U.S.-EU issues similar to what the U.S. enjoys with current EU member states.  With this goal in mind, Mr. Ries and his delegation would like during this visit to help establish an open, harmonious dialogue with Lithuanian authorities on issues affecting Lithuania, the U.S. and the EU, building on the excellent bilateral relations already in existence between the U.S. and Lithuania.

Mr. Ries will meet with a Lithuanian Government Delegation led by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Rytis Martikonis.

Mr. Ries will also meet with Petras Austrevicius, Head of the Lithuanian European Committee at 2.15 p.m.
 
Short Biography
 
Charles P. Ries has served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs since 2000. Prior to his appointment, he was Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in London (1996-2000) and Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the European Union (1992-1996). From 1990 to 1992 he was detailed to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative as Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for North American Affairs and a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiating team. Since joining the Foreign Service in 1977, he also has served as a special assistant and executive assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, in the Energy Policy Office and the Office of the Counselor, and at the U.S. Embassies in Ankara and Santo Domingo.
