Lithuania and the United States Sign the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Agreement
October 2, 2002
Vilnius, October 3, 2002. The U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania, John F. Tefft, and the Minister of Education of Science, Algirdas Monkevičius, will sign a formal agreement to cooperate in the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program (www.globe.gov) at the Lithuanian Ministry of Education and Science at 15.00h.
The GLOBE Program is an international environmental science and education program for schools. It brings students, teachers, and scientists together to study the global environment. Lithuania is the 100th country to join this special program.
This international global network of students encourages studying environmental issues and sharing useful environmental data with the international school science community.
Students at all network schools throughout the world conduct fundamental environmental activities and receive hands-on training based on a primary and secondary school education program, which provides possibilities to:
make scientifically valid environmental measurements in the fields of atmosphere, hydrology, soils, and land cover/phenology at or near their schools;
report their data to a GLOBE data processing site through the Internet and create maps and graphs on the free GLOBE interactive web site;
study the environment by relating their observations and the resulting images to broader environmental topics;
collaborate with scientists and other GLOBE students around the world exchanging information.
Teachers receive GLOBE assistance through:
training at professional development workshops;
teacher's guides, "how-to" videos;
continuing support from GLOBE partners, other schools, and scientists worldwide.
