Young Lithuanians invited to compete for places at U.S. Military Academies

13 September 2006

The U.S. Embassy has opened the application period for those interested in competing for spots at a U.S. Service Academy for the academic year starting in July 2007.  The spots are for a four year program of study at a U.S. service academy.

Lithuanians must be born after July 1, 1984, and be at least 17 years old.  Candidates must be high school graduates, or currently in their last year of high school.  Applicants must have good English language skills and a strong academic record in math and sciences.   After selection and graduation from a U.S. Service Academy, Lithuanian graduates will be required to serve a commitment to the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Application deadline is 22 September 2006.  Candidates may contact the Lithuanian Military Academy Selection Center or the U.S. Embassy Office of Defense Cooperation.

This is part of a worldwide competition.  Currently there are 12 Lithuanians students at the four U.S. Service Academies.  Three are at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, three at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, two at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and four at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.

In May, three Lithuanians graduated and have returned to Lithuania to receive military commissions and begin their careers in the Lithuanian Armed Forces.   In addition to academic training the young people compete as members on the Service Academy athletic teams, and during the summer months they participate in military training exercises, travel to other countries, and participate in various international programs.
