September 11 Commemorative Event
September 10, 2002
Vilnius, September 9, 2002: The Embassy of the United States of America in Vilnius will conduct a short memorial service outside the embassy’s chancery building at 12:00 noon on September 11, 2002 to commemorate the one year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. The national anthems of Lithuania and the United States will be played, Ambassador John F. Tefft and Prime Minister Algirdas Brauzauskas will make brief remarks, the “Varpas” choir will sing, and a memorial wreath will be laid, recalling the expressions of support and sympathy that were brought to the Embassy last year.
Ambassador Tefft will also participate with Mayor Arturas Zuokas in a September 11 commemorative event sponsored by the City of Vilnius that will take place in the courtyard of St. John’s at 10:00 A.M. At 2:46 P.M., the ambassador will attend the performance of Mozart’s Requiem, a free concert that is part of the worldwide “Rolling Requiem” commemoration of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At 6:00 P.M., Ambassador Tefft will attend a concert of American music performed by Ivan Thomas as part of the Rotuse Festival. Tickets for that concert will be on sale at the Rotuse on September 11.
