“Sister City” Delegation to Visit Lithuania from American State of Nebraska
7 June 2006
On June 7, a delegation from Omaha, Nebraska will come to Lithuania to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the Sister City relationship between the City of Šiauliai and the City of Omaha. The delegation, headed by Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey, consists of over 25 people, including an ensemble of Native American folklore artists who will treat audiences to performances of traditional dances and percussion during their tour of Lithuania. The performers will represent five different Native American tribes: the Omaha, the Ponca, the Winnebago, the Santee Sioux, and the Yankton Sioux.
The performance in Vilnius will take place on Savivaldybes Square on Gedimino Prospektas at 3:00pm on Saturday, June 10.
The delegation will first travel to Šiauliai, where they will meet Šiauliai Mayor Vytautas Juškus and entertain Šiauliai residents with a Native American folkdance performance. The delegation will then return to Vilnius on June 10 for its final performance.
Several other pairs of U.S. and Lithuanian cities enjoy Sister City relationships. Cities often develop these shared initiatives and relationships to make a local contribution towards fostering Lithuanian-American relations. The other partnerships include: Kaunas and Los Angeles, California; Klaipeda and Cleveland, Ohio; Vilnius and Madison, Wisconsin; and Marijampole and Poway, California.
