U.S. State Department Releases Annual Report on Trafficking in Persons
6 June 2006
On June 5, the U.S. Department of State announced the release of the sixth annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. The Department of State is required by law to submit a report each year to the U.S. Congress on worldwide efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. The Report is intended to raise global awareness and spur effective actions to counter all forms of trafficking in persons.
In this year’s Report, Lithuania remained on “Tier 1”, the highest possible rating, due to the Lithuanian Government’s consistent efforts and steady determination to take the necessary steps to eliminate human trafficking. Lithuania has held this top position for several years and continues to demonstrate its dedication to tackling the serious problem of human trafficking. This year, the significant increase in the number of trafficking convictions, the increased financial support to NGOs, the strengthened criminal code on trafficking, and the dedicated specialized anti-trafficking police unit served once again as ample demonstration of the Lithuanian Government’s commitment to fighting this form of modern-day slavery.
