May 25, 2001

May 25, 2001-- Lithuanian Midshipman Vytenis Benetis graduates from the United States Naval Academy Class of 2001 on Friday, May 25 at 10:00 am. President George W. Bush is scheduled to deliver the commencement speech to the graduating class, which, along with Midshipman Benetis, includes foreign students from Cameroon, Trinidad, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey, Estonia, El Salvador, and Singapore.

Benetis will be the second Lithuanian to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, located in Annapolis, Maryland [http://www.nadn.navy.mil ]. The Naval Academy was established in 1845 and is an undergraduate college for the Navy that prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Cadet Benetis' outstanding performance at the Naval Academy earned him an invitation to attend the University of Maryland on a full scholarship to pursue doctoral studies in mechanical engineering. Such full stipends are only granted to the top ten percent of applicants.

The U.S.Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation in Vilnius locally administers the application process to all U.S. military academies, working in cooperation with the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.
