Charity Donation to Vilnius Orphanage No. 3 (V.Grybo 29, Vilnius)
April 17, 2003
On Friday, 18 April 2003, at 10:30h Ambassador J.F. Tefft will present a donation of knitted items to the younger children of Vilnius Orphanage No.3, as coordinated by the Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation.
The Seacoast Knitters Guild from Rye, New Hampshire, has organized this donation of over 90 knitted items – sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, and socks through the Embassy's Office of Defense Cooperation.
Mrs. Susan Thorner, ODC Chief's Maj Paige Thorner's mother, coordinated this project with her knitting group, called the Seacoast Knitters Guild. The delivered items were made by nine women belonging to the Guild.
The Guild chooses a special project each year. Last year they knitted for an orphanage in Russia. This year, Mrs. Thorner chose Vilnius, and this orphanage, because her daughter works and lives in Vilnius, and her grandchildren attend the American International School of Vilnius.
The Vilnius Orphanage No. 3 and the American International School of Vilnius (AISV) have had a special relationship for more than five years. AISV students and families donate gifts, food, clothing, as well as hygiene and school supplies to the orphanage several times a year.
