United States Armed Forces continue supporting an orphanage in Klaipeda

31 March 2006

On Friday, 31 March, the Rytas Orphanage in Klaipeda received a Humanitarian Assistance donation coordinated by the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius.

This donation consisted of a shipment of used furniture and equipment (estimated at USD 34,000) donated by the United States European Command (EUCOM) in Stuttgart, Germany, and is part of on-going project to assist in renovating the orphanage.

In 2004, a portion of this orphanage was renovated by U.S. military personnel participating in the EUCOM sponsored RESCUER MEDCEUR disaster response/medical training and humanitarian assistance mission exercise in the Klaipeda region.  The final phase of this renovation, which will improve the orphanage kitchen facilities, has been requested and is only awaiting funding to begin.
