Speaker of the House Pays Visit to Lithuania

March 23, 2001, Vilnius -- During his second visit to Lithuania, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert, will spend a ceremonious day in Vilnius. President Valdas Adamkus will award the Speaker the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas for his service to Lithuania. Later in the day, the Mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zuokas, will grant the Speaker the title of Honorary Citizen of Vilnius.
The day will be full of meetings with prominent Lithuanian officials, including a visit to the Presidency and lunch with the President, Chairman of the Seimas (the Lithuanian Parliament), Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, the Ministers of Defense and Economy, and the Lithuanian ambassador to the US. The Chairman of the Seimas, Arturas Paulauskas will receive Hastert at the Seimas where the Speaker will deliver a speech to Members of Parliament. The day will conclude with the ceremony at the City Hall at which Hastert will be made an Honorary Citizen of the city.
Dennis Hastert was elected Speaker of the House on January 6, 1999 and is now heading the 107th Congress. He was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1986 and represents the 14th Congressional District of Illinois.
