Ambassador Mull will unveil the Plaque to Commemorate the Former U.S. Embassy in Kaunas

February 27, 2004

Media event: 1 March 2004, 10.00h, V. Putvinskio st. 68, Kaunas

On Monday, March 1, 2004 Ambassador Stephen D. Mull will visit Kaunas.

At 09.00h Ambassador Mull will meet with Kaunas Mayor A. Garbaravicius and discuss regional economic development and cultural issues.

At 10.00h Ambassador Mull and the Mayor of Kaunas will unveil a plaque to commemorate the former United States Embassy and Consulate building on V. Putvinskis Street 68.

The United States Envoy to Lithuania Owen J.C. Norem worked in this building in 1934-1938.  In 1938 some embassy offices were moved to Trakai Street in Kaunas, but the V. Putvinskis street building continued to be used as a U.S. Embassy Chancery.

“Although our Ambassador Owen J.C. Norem was forced to leave Kaunas in 1940, the United States never officially recognized the illegal annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union.  Even during the darkest days of the Cold War, when the independence of the Baltic States appeared an impossible dream, we never forgot our friends in Lithuania,” notes Ambassador Stephen D. Mull.
